Recycling and sorting

At Tiedepuisto, consideration of environmental matters is part of everyday life. We recycle to minimise the amount of material that becomes waste. Use the shared collection bins in the corridors and bring other materials to the sorting point.

Location of shared collection bins and types of waste collected

Every shared collection point has bins for biowaste and combustible waste + 1 other type of waste:

  • 1st floor of building 1 + metal
  • 2nd floor of building 1 + glass
  • 1st floor of building 2 (northern lift): + glass
  • 1st floor of building 2 (southern lift): + metal
  • 1st floor of building 3A + metal, coloured paper, cardboard
  • 4th floor of building 3A (netWork Oasis): + glass
  • 1st floor of building 3B + glass
  • 1st floor of building 4A + metal
  • 1st floor of building 4B + glass
  • 2nd floor of building 1
  • 1st-2nd floor of building 2
  • 1st and 4th floors of building 3A

Sorting point

The sorting point on the 1st floor of building 4A has collection bins for the following waste types:

  • A compactor for combustible waste (remember to start the compactor when you put waste in)
  • A compactor for recyclable cardboard (flatten larger pieces of cardboard and remember to start the compactor when you put cardboard in)
  • Biowaste
  • Final waste (landfill waste)
  • Paper
  • Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)
  • Glass
  • Burnt out lamps and light bulbs
  • Metal waste
  • Batteries (battery collection bins are also located in the main lobby of building 1 and in the lobbies of buildings 3A and 3B)
  • Ink cartridges

The sorting point is open on weekdays from 7.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

Cardboard and packaging waste

The ISS Palvelut cleaner will take small amounts of cardboard to the sorting point, in conjunction with normal cleaning rounds. Each company is responsible for taking larger cardboard boxes to the sorting point in building 4A or should purchase this service from a cleaning services provider. In this case, please contact miia.lahteenmaki@businessjoensuu.fi.

Please note: Remember to take large amounts of packing waste directly to the sorting point! Business Finland charges a fee of EUR 50/pallet for any pallets and packaging waste left in the corridors and lobbies.

Paper collection

Wastepaper should be taken to the appropriate collection bins. There are separate bins for coloured paper and white paper. Notify your ISS Palvelut cleaner if your office or workstations do not have a paper collection bin or you need more of them. Please note that shredded paper belongs in the trash bin (combustible waste). A4 sheet that has been torn into a maximum of 4 sections can still be placed in the paper collection bin, as well as post-it notes.

Do not put paper intended for destruction into the paper collection bin! If necessary, you can order a paper destruction service subject to a fee from Tiedepuisto's Lobby Services. We recommend that all paper intended for destruction be stored in locked containers in all conditions- this also applies to the container of papers for destruction kept under your own desk!

Combustible waste

Mixed waste and energy waste are now called combustible waste. Nearly all the waste produced in an office environment is combustible waste that you can put into the trash bin at your workstation or in the shared facilities. The contents of the trash bin are transferred from Kontiosuo Waste Centre to the Riikinvoima Eco Power Plant for combustion.

In terms of the eco power plant, it's good to remove biowaste, glass and metal from the combustible waste, because they cause corrosion and wear in the power plant structures. Please remember to sort the waste correctly! Read the instructions for sorting combustible waste here: https://www.puhas.fi/en/sorting.html

Biowaste, glass and metal must be delivered to the appropriate collection bins. Suitable collection bins are located in different parts of Tiedepuisto.
